Butt Bench
Boulder, CO
This bench transforms a reclaimed glulam beam into a sculpted piece of functional furniture. Salvaged timber was carefully selected, laminated into a solid block, and digitally surfaced to carve a series of flowing forms. The resulting geometry creates varied seating experiences: a deeper indentation encourages visitors to settle in and linger, while a smaller seat offers a place for brief rest. A continuous one-inch solid steel rod forms the structural support, precisely bent to balance the shifting loads of the seating surfaces, with a welded brace providing lateral stability. Together, the crafted wood and expressive steel structure celebrate reuse, digital fabrication, and the quiet social moments that form around a place to sit.
