Icelandic Cave Visitor Center

Karlagjá Caves, Iceland

Located at the boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, these landmark towers mark a threshold between the shifting landscape above and geothermal caves below. Designed to move subtly alongside one another over time, the towers frame a series of changing portals that regulate access to underground hot springs and caves. Elevated boardwalks guide visitors through the fragile volcanic terrain and into the caves while protecting the surrounding ecosystem—preserving the landscape through carefully structured use. Powered by geothermal energy and supported by integrated water and waste systems, the project operates as a self-sufficient visitor center, spa, and café. The concrete towers are conceived as enduring landmarks, remaining as quiet follies within the landscape long after human activity fades.
